Key Takeaways:

Dhruv started reading very early on in life yet comprehension is one of the challenges he faces. He loves music reality shows (Rising Star is his favorite) and had got into the habit of watching Indian Idol so we would record it and let him watch. Since the series got over I wanted to delete the recorded episodes ( twenty of them ) but I needed to convince him so I told him he could keep five episodes and I would delete the rest. I told him he could choose the episodes he wanted but I realized he wasn’t understanding what I was saying and he ended up choosing all twenty.

So, I chose a different tack. I wrote the serial number of each episode on the blackboard and told him he could circle the five episodes he wanted to keep and he finally understood it and circled it. Next to make sure he had understood what I meant I went to each episode, showed him the series number, and asked should we keep or delete it? He was pretty clear on what he wanted and chose the same five! What was amazing was he knew exactly who had come in each episode and which songs were sung by each contestant in each episode!

I used his love for music to teach comprehension and simplified it according to his needs. As a parent one needs to take cues from the child and work with his interest and try innovative ways to work with the child. We were both super thrilled he got the concept and I am sharing this in the hope it helps some children and parents. ????
